said Medical Aid is \u2018forced\u2019 to cover any individual whether they want to or not (principle of open enrollment). Therefore The enabling legislation here is the \u2018Medical Schemes Act 131 of 1998\u2019. This said, make no mistake that Medical Aid is a legalised Pyramid scheme! The sick subsidise the healthy, simple as that. More healthy members means more money for sick members. The key take-away from the Act is that &#8216;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">No Medical insurer may do the job of a Medical Aid<\/span>&nbsp;in any way.&nbsp;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3c4d2d5 jltma-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3c4d2d5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>No Medical insurer may do the job of a Medical Aid<\/b> in any way. E.g. let\u2019s say \u2018X\u2019 Health insurance company offers an insurance policy that covers say, maternity fees to a Rand amount. The policyholder in this instance is bound by what the policy wording says to the letter so a premature birth or further unforeseen complications are highly unlikely to be covered as with a Medical Aid. Most importantly, the insurer also has to ordinarily refund the policyholder and not the provider, therefore the hospital\/doctor would ordinarily require up-front payment from the patient. In minor instances this varies, but the point is there is nothing like Medical Aid, not in South Africa or any other country for that matter. We forget this as SA citizens. We have had many clients emigrating and asking us for cover similar to Medical Aid and besides NHS in UK which comes close, there is none.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3fe2745 jltma-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3fe2745\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>The premiums\/contributions are set out each year standard and they can\u2019t be reduced or increased for anyone, no matter how low or high a risk they pose to the Medical Aid\u00a0<\/b>(<a href=\"https:\/\/wwfs.co.za\/late-joiner-penalties-ljps-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Late-Joiner Penalties (LJP&#8217;s)<\/b><\/a>\u00a0are the only exception).\u00a0<b><\/b><br \/>Lastly, <b>the term <a href=\"https:\/\/wwfs.co.za\/prescribed-minimum-benefit-pmb-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB)<\/a><\/b><b>\u00a0is the most crucial term. <\/b>Understand, it again \u2018forces\u2019 the Medical Aid to cover the costs related to diagnosis or treatment &amp; care of:<\/p><ol><li>Any life-threatening emergency medical condition\u00a0<\/li><li>A defined set of 271 diagnostic treatment pairs\u00a0<\/li><li>27 chronic conditions (Chronic Disease List (CDL) conditions).<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7f9d84f jltma-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7f9d84f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The personalised Medical Aid quotation you receive via email will detail any potential <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wwfs.co.za\/late-joiner-penalties-ljps-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Late-Joiner Penalties (LJP\u2019s)<\/a><\/strong> or reduction in premium due to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wwfs.co.za\/low-income-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low income<\/a><\/strong>.
